Welcome to the class of 2025-2026!

Dear Students,

We've been working together for a month now, and I am having a good time while introducing you to the literature written in English. I hope you've realized by now that you're doing the degree that you wanted to do, and also that you feel welcome and accepted on the Humanities Campus. I'll do my best to help you feel at home!

I know for a fact that one of the best ways to learn about literature is reading, that goes without saying, but writing is essential too. So that's why I created this blog--so that those of you who want to try their hands at writing feel encouraged to do so and can have a place to see their texts published. I'm sure there are a few writers among you... so I'll be waiting for you to come out and let us all enjoy your amazing works!

Best wishes,

Carolina

Welcome to the class of 2024-2025!

Dear Students,

I've only known you for a month or so, but I can already say that I am delighted to be your teacher of English Literature. I have fun with you in my classes, and I've just discovered that there are a number of poets among you, and good ones at that!, which pleases me a lot.

So, this is just to say, as William Carlos Williams would put it, that you've stolen my heart, and also that I hope you'll enjoy this introductory course to English Literature and will learn a great deal.

May English Literature become your sweet, and cold, and delicious plums--the forbidden fruit that will grant you hours and hours of pleasure.

Best wishes,

Carolina

Welcome to the Class of 2022-2023

Dear Class of 2022-2023,

It is for me a pleasure to welcome you to the University of Oviedo and, in particular, to the Humanities Campus. It is always a pleasure to meet new students and to see so much potential in each new group. But this year the pleasure is even more intense than in the past, because after two years of having online classes and wearing facemasks when in-person classes were resumed, having the chance of seeing you, actually seeing your faces, makes me undescribably happy.

I hope you'll enjoy your classes and will learn a lot. We--the older generations--need you to do your best, as in just a few years you'll be "out there," in charge of running the world, which you'll no doubt turn into a better place. We're counting on you!!!

But before that, I want to challenge you to a less daunting task. Will you dare to write a few poetic lines? You may choose to write a rhyming couplet with no particular meter or a couple of iambic pentameters with or without rhyme. Who will take the challenge?

I'm looking forward to reading your lines!

Best wishes,

Carolina

P.S. By the way, I wrote my own lines while thinking of the over-reachers we've been discussing in class and the plums in William Carlos Williams's poem "This Is Just To Say", remember?

Here they go:

"Fruit from Paradise"

The boldest dream may seem within your reach.

The fruit you wish may too. So grab the peach!

Welcome to the class of 2019

Dear class of 2019,

On behalf of the LITIN teaching staff, I would like to welcome you all to the UniOvi Humanities Campus, and, more specifically, to the course Intoduction to English Literature.

As I explained to you in class, this course blog is an excellent tool for us, both teachers and students, to see how creative you are, and how good at writing amazing poems and short stories.

Every now and then, I will suggest a challenge for you, and you are more than welcome to accept each and every challenge, or maybe just the one, depending on how much free time you have, or how appealing each challenge is for you.

A few days ago, I suggested you write a short story which contains one sphere that is of special relevance for the developement of the narrative. One student in the morning group has already dared to pick up the challenge, and she has written a wonderful short story. Please read it and leave your comments. And see if you'd like to try you hand at writing your own story with a sphere in it!

I'm looking forward to reading everything you write!

Best wishes,

Carolina
